The Last Retreat (2022 -2025)
At the end of WWI, war artist brothers Paul and John Nash returned home from the frontline, lucky to be alive. Traumatised and facing financial hardship, they sought solace by immersing themselves in nature and by painting landscapes around Whiteleaf, Buckinghamshire.
Returning to the sites of these paintings a century later, Lian Chan re-establishes our connection with them through photography. Against the backdrop of climate crises, wars, and the uncertainties of our present and future, their role as places of sanctuary and stability comes into question.
