The Last Retreat (2022 ongoing)

In 1918 John Nash arrived home from the frontline in France during WWI, one of only a few survivors from his regiment. Traumatised, facing financial hardship and personal challenges, he sought solace by immersing himself in nature and through painting his local landscapes in Buckinghamshire.

Returning to the sites of these paintings a century later, Lian Chan re-establishes our connection with them through photography.  The project considers the role these sites once played, as places of stability and sanctuary, somewhere to withdraw to in uncertain times. However, with nature itself at threat and war in Europe the scenes become burdened with new concerns of the present and future.
