Mapping the Cross (2019)

The Whiteleaf Cross is a hill figure carved into the chalky Chiltern Landscape. Shaped as a cross on a wide triangular base, it is a substantial landmark clearly visible from miles away. Up close the shape is less clear, the carved earth morphs and abstracts as you move around it, the unnervingly steep slope drops away rapidly beneath you.

Absent of a certain history, speculation only can shed light on why it was created. The exposed chalk evidences the presence of those who chose to communicate something important about their time in this mysterious place.

Mapping the Cross is printed on Archival Kozo Washi paper and folds like a map.

This artwork features on a Floor Lamp design available at Habitat from Autumn/Winter 2021. Click here to see the lamp design.
